As part of a Public Records Request to the City of Shreveport, documents related to Sergeant Brent Mason's disciplinary & IAB files with the Shreveport Police Department were obtained and submitted to We Hear You Shreveport.
Sergeant Mason is expected to appeal the most recent disciplinary action stemming from his violation of SPD’s Social Media Policy through posts made on his personal Facebook account in the aftermath of the death of Mr. George Floyd in Minneapolis. Records associated with that incident were not provided as part of this public records request.
The following is a summary of a number of the violations and incidents outlined in the disciplinary & IAB files spanning the tenure of Sergeant Mason's employment with the Shreveport Police Department. You can read the original files in their entirety on our Records Page.
- February 2000 Violation - Incompetence & Neglect of Duty - It was discovered that Sgt. Mason did not report an incident of an adult and a juvenile having "sexual relations" in his residence.
- August 2000 Violation - Incompetence & Neglect of Duty - It was discovered that Sgt. Mason did not report possible illegal sexual activities involving adults and juveniles at and near his residence.
- 04/19/01 through 04/21/01 Violation - Use of Drugs
- 05/10/01 Violation - Incompetence & Neglect of Duty Violations
- 04/28/03 Violation - Use of Departmental Email - It was determined that Sgt. Mason sent numerous e-mails between 12/10/02 and 02/10/03 that were determined to be "inappropriate, vulgar and obscene" from his e-mail account.
- 02/17/05 Violation - Use of Departmental Email - It was determined that Sgt. Mason sent e-mail on or about 11/02/04 that was "inappropriate and political in nature".
- 05/19/05 Violations: Operation of Mobile Video Systems Equipment, Use of Force not justified. Incident - Sgt. Mason chased after a juvenile that he thought was another suspect who had escaped from his vehicle/custody days prior. Tased the juvenile, did not do a full search of the individual claiming that he had urinated on himself. Transported to Juvenile Dock where it was discovered the juvenile had not urinated on himself and also had a loaded handgun on his person.
